A recent extra motivation for this adventure came in the form of the movie 'The secret life of Walter Mitty' in which Walter, played by Ben Stiller, is a day dreamer of the tenth degree. He's long dreamed of travelling the world but life's path has curtailed his dreams and instead he's settled into routine and procrastination. As his story continues a series of events sends him on an adventure that stretches him way past his usual comfort zone and by the end of his travels emerges a new and much more confident version of his former self. One of the most noted scenes in the movie is when Mitty rides his newly acquired longboard down an amazingly scenic twisting mountain road. Much as packing my #1 Cuda Skate Deck proved challenging, I set myself the challenge to skate some of the locations in the movie including this picturesque downhill. As it turned out this hill was a bit too steep for my skill level and the short wheelbase of my 'Redhead' deck but I still had fun riding what I could.

Seyðisfjörður - The picturesque village that Walter longboards into from the top of the mountain pass

You'll also recognise this waterfall at the end of the scene

Japanese wanderings

A couple of months back we travelled through Japan which afforded me some sketching time. The first came from a coach ride from Tokyo to Takiyama, wasn't a lot to choose from so the cockpit of the coach was as good of a topic as any. The driver and I had some "lost in translation" conversation at the rest stops so at the end of the journey I gave the sketch to him. His was so impressed that he showed it off to the other drivers at the terminus and gave me his packet of sweets. Shirakawa-Go is a World Heritage listed village in the mountains and sketch location number two. Tamaki now has this sketch.

Hiroshima was on our itinerary and didn't disappoint. During our stay we took the ferry out to Miyajima Island, beautiful vista from the top of the mountain and plenty of sketching options. This is what I chose.

And a random little shrine wedged in a corner on a narrow laneway.

On a side note, my graphic design eye caught a number of random art peices on the street or in the subways, here's a few.

Art, just because

I'm sure that there's not a single artist in all of art history that hasn't looked upon another artists skill with some degree of envy. Art has always been something that I was drawn to and my parents will tell you that as a child I was quite happy with a box of pencils and a sketch book. Once I started full time work as a graphic designer the drawing and fine art got put aside and for the best part of two decades my childhood passion was boxed and put on a shelf.

It was my wife that reignited the passion and pulled my box down off the shelf. She loves to travel, we both do, but for Tina it's an intense flame. This love of travel combined with the time to sit and sketch which travel holidays allow has given me a chance to start working on my technique.

Mostly felt pen on A5 cartridge paper, and usually done in a hurry so that I can get a chance to finish before setting off to our next point of call. I've come to quite enjoy these quick ramblings of ink, often they'll be done while sitting in a cafe or during a stroll on the beach, they're no masterpiece but Looking back on them always reminds me of the moment.

A few of these sketches have been handed over to those who had shared the experience with us, I like to think they're on a wall, if not that's okay because for a moment it was appreciated by the recipient.

Following are a few, I hope you like them because for me they're priceless.

Enjoy!

Paul

Outsourcing

Recently I've had some clients contact me to repair design projects that they've had done through online tender sites. These are bidding sites where a client can upload a brief and budget, then designers from anywhere in the world can bid on winning the contract. As you'd expect this includes India, Pakistan and China where the average wage is far lower than ours. What my clients have found is that, just as you'd expect, the standard is also much lower than ours. In one instance the quality was
